The Complete Website Audit Stack (2026)

A complete website audit stack has four layers: CRO and messaging (ClearAudit), performance (Google PageSpeed), indexing and search (Google Search Console), and technical SEO (Ahrefs or Screaming Frog). Behavioural tools like Hotjar are optional and only useful above 1,000 weekly sessions. Here is the full stack with India pricing and the patterns I see top growth teams actually use.

// QUICK ANSWER

A complete website audit stack has four layers: CRO and messaging (ClearAudit), performance (Google PageSpeed), indexing and search (Google Search Console), and technical SEO (Ahrefs or Screaming Frog). Behavioural tools are optional. For most Indian founders, three free tools cover it for ₹0 in under 10 minutes.

// THE STACK

Audit stack tool comparison

Seven tools across the four layers, with India pricing where it exists. Behavioural tools are listed but framed as optional — most Indian SMBs do not have enough traffic to make heatmaps statistically useful.

ToolLayerPricing
ClearAuditCRO + messaging₹199–₹1,499/mo
Google PageSpeedPerformanceFree
Google Search ConsoleIndexingFree
Screaming FrogTechnical SEO crawl~₹1,600/yr
AhrefsBacklinks + crawl~₹10,700/mo and up
Microsoft ClarityBehaviour (optional)Free unlimited
HotjarBehaviour (optional)₹1,200/mo and up
The Indian teams I see consistently shipping conversion wins are not running enterprise SEO suites. They are running ClearAudit, Search Console, and a Screaming Frog license — three tools, under ₹650 a month, and they read the output every Monday. The teams burning ₹40,000 a month on Ahrefs and SEMrush are usually the ones still arguing about whether the headline is unclear.

// LAYER BY LAYER

The audit stack, layer by layer

Each layer answers a different question. Here is what each tool audits, what it does not, and where it sits in the run order.

01

ClearAuditCRO + Messaging

What it audits

  • Headline clarity and value proposition
  • CTA visibility and copy effectiveness
  • Trust signals (testimonials, reviews, badges)
  • Conversion friction and form complexity
  • Mobile readiness and tap target size
  • India-specific signals (UPI badge, WhatsApp, COD)
  • Page structure and information hierarchy
  • Basic SEO (title, H1, meta description)

What it does NOT audit

Technical crawl errors, backlinks, server performance, session recordings

Cost

Free (2 audits/month), ₹199–₹1,499/mo paid

Time: 60 seconds per page

Recommendation

Run this first. It identifies the conversion problems no other tool sees — and it takes 60 seconds with no setup.

02

Google PageSpeed InsightsPerformance

What it audits

  • Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS)
  • Largest Contentful Paint (load time)
  • Time to First Byte (server response)
  • Image compression opportunities
  • JavaScript and CSS blocking resources
  • Mobile vs desktop performance scores

What it does NOT audit

Conversion quality, copy clarity, trust signals, user behaviour

Cost

Free

Time: 30 seconds

Recommendation

Run this second. A page can convert well with a 65 PageSpeed score — but below 50 on mobile, performance itself starts hurting conversions.

03

Google Search ConsoleIndexing + Search Performance

What it audits

  • Queries you rank for and impressions
  • Average position and CTR by query
  • Index Coverage (which pages Google actually indexed)
  • Core Web Vitals on real users (field data)
  • Mobile usability issues flagged by Google
  • Manual actions and security alerts

What it does NOT audit

Conversion quality, copy clarity, competitor backlinks, user behaviour

Cost

Free (always)

Time: 15 min setup, ongoing review

Recommendation

Mandatory. If your domain is not verified in Search Console, you are flying blind on every SEO decision you make. There is no skip case here.

04

Ahrefs or Screaming FrogTechnical SEO

What it audits

  • Crawl errors and broken links (404s)
  • Redirect chains and loops
  • Duplicate content and canonical issues
  • Missing or duplicate title tags and meta descriptions
  • Internal linking structure
  • Backlink profile and domain authority (Ahrefs only)
  • Keyword rankings and search visibility (Ahrefs only)

What it does NOT audit

Conversion quality, page messaging, user behaviour, performance scores

Cost

Screaming Frog free under 500 URLs (~₹1,600/yr paid) · Ahrefs from ~₹10,700/mo

Time: 10–30 min depending on site size

Recommendation

Run this for the full picture — especially before site migrations, redesigns, or when organic traffic is declining. Screaming Frog is the cheapest serious SEO tool an Indian agency can own.

05

Microsoft Clarity or HotjarBehaviour (optional)

What it audits

  • Session recordings (see real user journeys)
  • Heatmaps (where users click, scroll, move)
  • Rage clicks and dead clicks
  • Scroll depth (how far users actually read)
  • Exit points (where users leave the page)

What it does NOT audit

Why users leave (diagnosis), technical errors, search rankings, load time

Cost

Microsoft Clarity free unlimited · Hotjar free 35 sessions/day, ₹1,200/mo and up

Time: 10 min setup, review after 1–2 weeks of traffic

Recommendation

Optional, and only useful with 1,000+ weekly sessions. Below that, heatmaps are statistical noise. If you do install one, both Microsoft Clarity and Hotjar are reasonable starting points — see our ClearAudit vs Hotjar and ClearAudit vs Microsoft Clarity comparisons for the trade-offs.

// BY TEAM SIZE

Stack patterns by team size

There is no one correct stack. The right one depends on team size, traffic volume, and budget. These are the three patterns I see consistently among Indian founders, agencies, and growth teams.

Under ₹200/month

Solo founder

0–1,000 weekly sessions

Recommended stack

  • ClearAudit Free (2 audits/month) or Starter (₹199/month, 20 audits)
  • Google PageSpeed Insights (free)
  • Google Search Console (free)

Skip

Skip behavioural tools entirely. Skip Ahrefs and SEMrush until you are spending real budget on content or link-building.

This is the right stack for 80% of Indian D2C founders, indie SaaS makers, and personal portfolio sites.

₹500–₹2,000/month

Small agency or growth team

1,000–10,000 weekly sessions

Recommended stack

  • ClearAudit Pro (₹499/month, 60 audits) — enough for weekly CRO sweeps across 3–5 clients
  • Google Search Console (free) per client property
  • Screaming Frog license (~₹133/month amortised) for monthly technical crawls
  • Microsoft Clarity (free) on the highest-traffic client

Skip

Skip Ahrefs and SEMrush until a client explicitly pays for link-building work.

This stack covers the audit, performance, technical, and behavioural layers for under ₹650 a month — what Western teams pay ten times for.

₹5,000+/month

Growth team at scale

10,000+ weekly sessions

Recommended stack

  • ClearAudit Agency (₹1,499/month, 200 audits) for landing-page sweeps before every campaign
  • Ahrefs Lite (~₹10,700/month) for backlink intelligence and competitive gap analysis
  • Screaming Frog Pro for full site crawls
  • Google Search Console + GA4 for query and conversion attribution
  • Hotjar Plus or Microsoft Clarity for session recordings

Skip

Skip SEMrush if you already have Ahrefs. The overlap is 80% and the per-month cost is hard to justify on top of an existing Ahrefs subscription.

Reserved for teams running paid ads above ₹2,00,000/month or managing 10+ client sites.

// STEP BY STEP

The 30-minute audit workflow

For a single landing page, the full stack runs in under 30 minutes. Here is the order I use, and why.

01

Paste the URL into ClearAudit

60 sec

Get scored findings for CRO, messaging, copy, and India-specific conversion signals. Note the top 3 critical issues.

02

Run Google PageSpeed Insights

30 sec

Check mobile score. If below 50, performance is likely contributing to bounce rate before messaging even matters.

03

Open Google Search Console

5 min

Review Performance tab for queries the page already ranks for. These are the keywords your CRO fixes need to convert against.

04

Crawl with Screaming Frog or Ahrefs

10–30 min

Run a full crawl to catch broken links, redirect issues, duplicate titles, and missing meta tags across the entire site.

05

Cross-reference findings

15 min

ClearAudit finds the conversion problem → Search Console confirms users are arriving on the relevant query → fix it → re-audit with ClearAudit to verify the score improved.

// THE CAVEAT

A note on behavioural tools (Hotjar, Microsoft Clarity)

Older versions of this guide put a behavioural tool in the core stack. We have since pulled it out because the data we see is consistent: under 1,000 weekly sessions, heatmaps and session recordings are statistical noise. You will see one user rage-click and conclude the page is broken, when in reality you have a sample of one. The pattern is worse on Indian D2C stores where mobile sessions are short, scroll-heavy, and easy to misread.

If you do have the traffic, both Microsoft Clarity (free, unlimited) and Hotjar (free 35 sessions/day, ₹1,200/mo paid) are reasonable choices. The trade-offs differ — Clarity is free forever but the UI is utilitarian, Hotjar costs more but has better filtering and integrations. We have separate comparisons on the ClearAudit vs Hotjar and ClearAudit vs Microsoft Clarity pages.

The sequence that works: ClearAudit diagnoses the likely conversion problem in 60 seconds → behavioural tool (if installed) confirms users are hitting that exact friction → fix → re-audit. Behavioural data alone, without a CRO diagnosis to test, usually leads to weeks of watching recordings without a clear next action.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum viable website audit stack?

For an Indian founder with under 1,000 weekly sessions, the minimum viable audit stack is three free tools: ClearAudit (CRO and messaging, free for 2 audits a month), Google PageSpeed Insights (performance, unlimited free), and Google Search Console (indexing and search performance, always free). Total cost: ₹0. Total time to run: under 10 minutes. Add a technical crawler like Screaming Frog (free up to 500 URLs) only when you have multi-page sites or a planned migration. Behavioural tools like Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity are optional and only useful once you have meaningful traffic.

Do I need Hotjar AND ClearAudit?

No. They answer different questions and most Indian SMBs only need one of them, or neither. ClearAudit tells you why a page is unlikely to convert by reading it the way a CRO consultant would — useful from day one with zero traffic. Hotjar tells you what real users did on the page — only useful with 1,000+ weekly sessions, otherwise the heatmaps are statistical noise. If you have under 1,000 weekly sessions, use ClearAudit. If you have more, ClearAudit diagnoses the problems first and Hotjar (or Microsoft Clarity) confirms them in user behaviour.

How do I audit 30 pages a month without burning my budget?

For 30 pages a month, the cheapest serious stack is ClearAudit Pro (₹499/month, 60 credits) + Google Search Console (free) + Screaming Frog Pro (~₹1,600 a year amortised to ~₹133/month). Total: under ₹650/month for 30 full CRO audits plus unlimited technical crawls and search performance data. Compare against running the same workload on SEMrush Pro (~₹9,200/month) or Ahrefs Lite (~₹10,700/month). Most Indian agencies do not need keyword-rank-tracking software to audit client landing pages.

Which audit tools accept INR and Indian payment methods?

ClearAudit is the only tool in the stack with native INR pricing, UPI payments via Razorpay, and GST invoicing. Google PageSpeed and Search Console are free. Screaming Frog charges in GBP (license is roughly ₹1,600/year at current exchange). Ahrefs, SEMrush, Hotjar, and Microsoft Clarity bill in USD on international cards — you will eat a 2–4% forex markup plus FX volatility each month.

Is Microsoft Clarity still the default behavioural tool?

It is one of two reasonable free behavioural tools, alongside Hotjar (free tier). We deliberately frame both as optional in this stack. The reason: most Indian SMBs we audit do not have enough weekly sessions for heatmaps to be statistically meaningful, and behavioural data without enough volume creates false confidence. If you have over 1,000 weekly sessions and want behavioural data, both Microsoft Clarity and Hotjar work. See our deeper comparison on the ClearAudit vs Microsoft Clarity and ClearAudit vs Hotjar pages.

What does the top 10% of growth teams actually use?

Across the audits we have run on Indian D2C, SaaS, and services sites, the most consistent high-performer stack is: ClearAudit Pro for weekly CRO sweeps, Google Search Console for query and CTR tracking, Screaming Frog for monthly technical crawls, and one of Hotjar or Microsoft Clarity if traffic is high enough. Ahrefs is added only when link-building is an explicit growth lever. The teams that consistently lose money are the ones spending ₹40,000+/month on enterprise SEO suites whose CRO and messaging modules are weaker than a ₹499/month focused tool.
